Even with the lake water separating them, The Fox could feel the woman’s raw joy. Even from a distance, she could see the dazzling brightness of her newest connection cord. The Fox gazed at it, the way she gazed at the moon and stars, soaking in the beauty.

CHAPTER 13

Nick walked back out to the doctor’s waiting room, holding his crutches under one arm. Banana stood and put his phone in his pocket. “Looks like it went well.”

“I’ve been cleared to walk, unless it starts getting painful, and she gave me a few basic exercises. But she doesn’t want me to drive until all the tenderness is gone. I’m thinking I’ll stay at least another week. I can do most of my work remotely, and I’d like to get out in the woods at least a little. Not the Wilderness, of course,” Nick added quickly. “I know I’m not ready for that.”

Banana’s phone buzzed as they walked toward the front door. “Probably Honey again. She wants to know how it went last night. I guess Annie’s not giving enough details.” He opened the door for Nick.

“If Annie’s not saying, I don’t think I should either. But if you guarantee it’ll just stay between you and me . . .”

“Not a problem. Did I ask you how it went when I picked you up? No. Because I figured if you wanted me to know, you’d tell me,” Banana said. “Although I thought you’d want to tell me right away, considering I took you in when you needed help, found you a place to stay, fed you, drove you to the doctor, got you the best table at—”

“Okay, okay. You’re right.” Nick climbed into the Jeep, then waited for Banana to get behind the wheel. “I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday. All because of Annie. She brought me the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had.”

“And?”

“And it had chocolate buttercream frosting with chocolate ganache on top of that. Like I said, amazing.” Nick tried to keep a straight face, but cracked up about two seconds later. “It really was a great night.”

“Good. I know Annie wanted you to have a good birthday.” Banana pulled out onto the street.

“I couldn’t even wait until the night was over before I asked her out again. I had to know. If she hadn’t agreed . . .” Nick shook his head. “Let me ask you something. Annie said you’d done a bunch of trail rescues. Did you ever save anyone’s life?”

“I don’t know, not for sure. But there’s one time I can think of where it’s likely I did.”

“Did you feel a connection between the two of you?”

“Definitely.” Banana thought for a moment. “But I felt that with a lot of the people I spent time with on the trail. Maybe it’s having a common goal. Maybe it’s that everyone who decides to spend months on the trail is a little crazy, and crazy recognizes crazy? I don’t know.”

Nick used his fingers to comb his hair off his forehead.
